Surveys

A large majority of Americans want genetically engineered foods to be labeled.

The Coordinating Council is planning to run surveys to learn more about Americans' attitudes toward genetically engineered foods. In the meantime, here are some survey results from other organizations.

93 percent of Americans support labeling

Americans, by a huge margin, want genetically engineered foods to be labeled. According to a June 2001 ABC News telephone poll of 1,024 adults, in fact, a whopping 93 percent of Americans support labeling. "Such near unanimity in public opinion is rare," according to the ABC News article that explains the results of the survey.

In addition, a majority of Americans -- 52 percent -- believe genetically engineered foods are unsafe, according to the survey. In addition, 57 percent say they'd be less likely to buy foods labeled as genetically engineered. And while only five percent of Americans say they'd be more likely to buy foods with "genetically modified" labels, 52 percent say they'd be more likely to purchase foods with an "organic" label.
